Bay Tree Refurbishment Week 6

The Bay Tree is now closed for a major refurbishment, re-opening May 2017.

We are still reachable at 01843 862502 and enquiries@baytreebroadstairs.co.uk

More scaffolding has gone up around The Bay Tree. Our chimney pots have been removed (whilst we take out the chimneys below, to create more space for our new bathrooms and wet-rooms).

Here’s some of our chimney’s now removed from Room 5, one of our sea-view rooms, looking up through the roof to Room 8 above. Just think of the extra space we will gain!

This is the other side of the same chimney, in Room 4, our balcony sea-view room, which will also be coming out.

At the rear of The Bay Tree, we are almost done with the demolition of the old owners extension. We will rebuild this area, in the same footprint, on 3 floors, but using the traditional Imperial Red Brick inEnglish Bond to keep in the same style as the original building. This area will get a new room with full disabled access on the ground floor and it’s own private patio, a rear entrance to the building and an enlarged kitchen and utility area.

We are also changing a lot of our infrastructure, including replacing our drains and changing all our electricity and heating supplies.

As you can see, we are literally built on top of our chalk cliffs

We’ve been saving pieces of our original wallpapers, which Alison, our Head of Housekeeping, will transform into a beautiful, framed collage.

Where we can, we are also trying to save some of the original tiles from our fireplaces, to re-use around the hotel.

We’ve also been busy carefully selecting fireplaces (with ‘living flame effect’ gas fires for our luxury library (which will go to the left of our main entrance, replacing our old Room 1 ground floor room) and in our sea-view lounge. We will be respecting the fact The Bay Tree was built in 1895 and choosing appropriate Victorian pieces that will be appropriate for the age of our building.

Ben, our Bedlington Poodle, dressed here for autumn, is helping us choose. (We won’t be putting stoves in our fireplaces).

We are also busy purchasing unique furniture to go into our guest bedrooms, such as this desk.

We are looking carefully at unique lighting we will use in our guest bedrooms as well.

We are doing our best to replace our stair spindles and rails (unfortunately, they are missing on both our first and second floor landings where they were replaced by fire-prevention screens, which we have now taken out as we can use a modern sprinkler fire-prevention system instead).
